lipid raft Specialized membrane domains composed mainly of cholesterol and sphingolipids, and relatively poor in polyunsaturated lipids such as glycerophospholipids. The formation of these membrane domains is promoted by the presence of cholesterol in the lipid bilayer: the rigid hexagonal rings of cholesterol can pack tightly against the saturated hydrocarbon chains of some membrane lipids, allowing these lipids to assemble into cohesive units floating in the mass of loosely packed polyunsaturated plasma membrane components. 46 0.11 4 35.18 5.61e-06
soluble fraction That fraction of cells, prepared by disruptive biochemical methods, that is soluble in water. 333 0.82 6 7.29 2.07e-04
extracellular space That part of a multicellular organism outside the cells proper, usually taken to be outside the plasma membranes, and occupied by fluid. 647 1.60 7 4.38 1.31e-03
plasma membrane part Any constituent part of the plasma membrane, the membrane surrounding a cell that separates the cell from its external environment. It consists of a phospholipid bilayer and associated proteins. 2374 5.87 13 2.22 7.37e-03
mitochondrial outer membrane The outer, i.e. cytoplasm-facing, lipid bilayer of the mitochondrial envelope. 52 0.13 2 15.56 7.46e-03
cell fraction A generic term for parts of cells prepared by disruptive biochemical techniques. 1358 3.36 9 2.68 7.59e-03
intercellular junction A specialized region of connection between two cells including but not limited to gap junctions, desmosomes, and tight junctions, but excluding direct cytoplasmic junctions such as ring canals. 174 0.43 3 6.97 9.52e-03
organelle outer membrane The outer, i.e. cytoplasm-facing, lipid bilayer of an organelle envelope. 60 0.15 2 13.48 9.83e-03
